Make a free ringtone using Audacity
Don't waste your time trying to find and download free ringtones for your cell phone! Use this tutorial to make your own ringtone with Audacity
Make a ringtone using Audacity in minutes:
1. Download the free audio editor Audacity
Audacity is an open-source tool that is available for all major platforms - Windows, Mac and Linux.
2. Download LAME for Audacity
The Lame encoder allows Audacity to export files as MP3 files.
3. If you want to make a ringtone from an MP3 file, make its copy first.
4. Run Audacity, select File -> Open and open the MP3 you would like to make into a ringtone.
5. After Audacity loaded your file, select the part you want to use as a ringtone.
To better understand where you are in the audio file, zoom your audio view by clicking the magnifying glass with "+" or select View in the program toolbar and then Zoom in.
Play the song to understand what part you want to use. Use the Selection tool to mark the start and highlight the necessary part of the file. On the bottom of the screen you can find information about start and end points and the duration.
6. Now cut off the rest of the file (the part you do not need) leaving only the 15-30 seconds portion, select Edit and then Trim
7. To export your file to MP3 format, you will need the Lame encoder for Audacity.
Select Edit -> Preferences in the program window and open the Libraries tab, click the Find Library button and locate the saved lame_enc.dll.
When you are done with lame_enc.dll, select File and then Export as MP3 and select where to save your ringtone.
Your ringtone is ready to be loaded to your mobile phone.
